New French Signage Rules:
Quite a conundrum for many companies

Quebec businesses will need to prepare to reflect on the new rules on commercial signage in French, which will come into force on June 1, 2025.

According to the Office québécois de la langue française, French must be clearly predominant. This means there must be at least twice as much French as any other language in commercial signage.

Specifically, when the text written in French and in one or more other languages is displayed on the same medium, the space allowed for the French text, as well as the characters used, must be at least twice as large as the space allowed and the characters used for text in another language.

Companies with an English name are not required to change their name, but they must rearrange their signage by adding a slogan or description in French.

On June 19, the Government of Quebec enacted the Regulation to amend mainly the Regulation respecting the language of commerce and business. It was published on June 26, 2024 in the Gazette officielle du Québec (PDF, 291 KB)
